The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel written by
author Suzanne Collins. This is a science film and I am going to give a quick
summary of this movie. There are a lot of political and economical difficulties
faced. The setting is in Panem and has 12 districts were the residents are
divided in. The wealthiest and head of the government is the Capitol, which
controls all the districts. The Capitol has a lot of wealth and an interesting
trait to the people there is that they like to wear certain clothes and design
them. Everything is well detailed in the Capitol. President Snow is the
president and honestly for those who have seen the movie, they know how much
control he has and wants to see the 12 districts fight among each other.
When the districts began to rebel against the Capitol,
that is when the Hunger Games began. In these games children are chosen to
fight for their district. One boy and one girl, between the ages 12-18 must
participate if chosen.
The main characters in the movie Katniss Everdeen and
Peeta Mellark are the two that are chosen from district 12. District 12 is one of the poorer district and throughout the movie it is seen to be more gray and
gloomy.
When I first watched the movie, I was surprised to see
how much violence is seen throughout the movie and there are scenes that are
fatal. One thing that kept me wondering is why are the people in the Capitol
watching these children fight for their lives.
What kept me watching this movie is how the characters
Peeta and Katniss stay strong and fight to win the games. Both characters are
loyal, and didn’t want each other to be killed. They were both considered the winners,
but their winnings did not seem to benefit their district, it all went back to
the Capitol.
One interesting analysis of this movie, was how it
displays gender roles differently and challenges the stereotypes between women
and men. Katniss Everdeen’s character is different from the traits of what an ideal
women should be. She is tough, considered “a bad girl” who fights against the
Capitol for the people from her district. The author does an great job in
showing how the female character is the lead, she is a hero and has a lot of
courage. Suzanne Collins challenges stereotypes by having Katniss display more
ideal masculine traits of being tough and not showing emotion. Katniss has a
lot of control throughout the movie.
Peeta’s character displays a lot of emotion and is
more sensitive. He has a crush on Katniss and will always be there to talk with
her. Peeta never shows a lot of violence in the movie compared to the other
male characters. His character challenges ideal traits of a males.
Love is a theme seen throughout the movie. The
relationship between Peeta and Katniss left me wondering what will happen in
the next movie. Katniss’s character has two different males falling for her and
have a connection with her. Katniss and Peeta develop more of an connection
when they are fighting in the games. Gale Hawthorne and Katniss do have an
connection a lot throughout the movie. All three of these characters are from
the same district. Gale’s character is more common stereotype of a male of
having to be muscular and tough.
I thought this movie was great and left me thinking about
how much control and power a division can have over others that are lower in
economic status. A lot of political struggles are shown, especially towards how
the wealthier in the Capitol want the districts below to fight to win things
that would help their districts a lot. This is the wealthiest peoples form of
entertainment.
I thought it was interesting in how gender stereotypes
and roles are being challenged. Over the years, we see the man in the movie as
the hero and the women need to be helped by lead male.
For those who
have seen the Hunger Games, what were your thoughts on this movie and the other
movies to this collection? For anyone who has not seen this movie, I would
recommend watching this movie it analyzes gender, politics and power among the characters.
